If you're trying to find some extra cash, why not take a close look at your own possessions? New research suggests that the average home is harbouring more than £1,000 worth of unwanted items. So next time you have a spare few hours, it might be worth going through your belongings and seeing if you can make some money out of them.

Average home contains £1,045 of unwanted goods
The average household contains £1,045 worth of junk, according to the latest research from online auction site eBay. Researchers discovered that people typically have around 28 unwanted items, ranging from unused mobile phone handsets and laptops to discarded handbags.

Londoners seem to be the most prone to hoarding unwanted possessions, with the average home in the capital thought to be housing £2,030 worth of unused items. It's a different picture in the north-west of England, where unused possessions are worth just £670 on average. But that could still pay for a holiday, reduce your credit card bill or cover your gas and electric payments for several months.

Items have surprisingly high re-sell value
You might think that your unused possessions are unlikely to be worth more than a few pounds, but one man's junk could well be another man's treasure. And the money will soon add up if you start trying to sell your unwanted items. Laura Wilkinson, a spokeswoman for eBay, told the Daily Mail: "You may no longer use something, but it might well be worth something in re-sell value. For example, satnavs sell for an average of £73, games consoles for £58 and bicycles for £122."

You don't have to be a computer whiz to make some money out of your unwanted items. If you're a little wary of the online marketplace, you can still profit from clearing out your house by loading all of your unused possessions into your car and popping along to your local car boot sale. You might be surprised by how much money you can get for your junk!ADNFCR-2196-ID-801392986-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
