Expect to pay a premium for Diamond Jubilee hotels.
Thinking of going away for the Jubilee bank holiday weekend? You may want to think again, at least if you are considering taking a mini-break in London. Figures show that families will pay well over the odds for hotel accommodation between Saturday June 2nd and Wednesday June 6th as hoteliers attempt to cash in on the festivities. In fact, you could find yourself paying premiums of up to 223% if you choose not to stay at home.

London hotels up 54%
If you want to be at the centre of the celebrations in London over the Jubilee weekend, expect to pay a 54% premium at the average hotel. This means a four-night visit to the capital could set you back by £1,043 more than expected. And if you plan to stay in a five-star hotel to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, you're likely to be asked to pay an average premium of 81%.

The figures come from Santander, whose spokesman Andy Smith commented: "Demand for hotel rooms in London is likely to be fierce over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, so we'd expect to see inflated room rates, but the premiums our research has uncovered will price many families out of the capital altogether."

Other cities copying the trend
Santander's research found that other cities around the UK will also be making the most of increased tourist demand during the first weekend of June. Edinburgh hotels will be charging an average of 28% more than during May, with hoteliers expecting an influx of holidaymakers.

How do you avoid paying too much?
The obvious answer is to stay at home and watch the celebrations from the comfort of your living room or on the television at your local pub. Towns and villages all over the UK will also be holding their own street markets to mark the occasion, providing plenty of opportunities to wave your Union Jack alongside your neighbours.

If you feel you simply have to be in London for the festivities, try to find accommodation that is slightly less central and consider staying at a campsite instead of a hotel - the atmosphere is likely to be fun-filled! Also, you should aim to book as soon as possible, ideally with a cashback credit card. This will take some of the pain out of paying more than expected for your hotel and will mean you feel slightly less resentful as you join the crowds.ADNFCR-2196-ID-801353332-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
