Home insurance customers reminded to lock sheds

Sheds should be locked at all times.
Householders should lock their sheds at all times to reduce the risk of theft and increase the chances of a successful home insurance claim in the event of a burglary, experts have said.
Research by M&S Money suggests that the average shed houses £988 worth of contents, yet 49% of respondents admitted that they never lock their shed door.
This is in spite of the fact that householders typically keep lawnmowers (38%), bicycles (28%) and DIY equipment (22%) in their sheds.
The M&S Money research team warned that the number of people with unlocked sheds has risen dramatically from just 24% in 2009.
Head of general insurance Andrew Ferguson commented: "The value of items kept in sheds can mount up, as our survey shows.
"We would urge householders to check whether their home insurance policy provides adequate cover for theft from a shed, and what security measures they may need to demonstrate to ensure any claims made are valid."
Figures from the 2009-10 British Crime Survey show that the number of domestic burglaries has fallen by 9% since the 2008-09 survey.
