Home insurance customers keen to confront burglars

Britons are often keen to confront law-breakers.
Many Britons may be putting their own safety at risk by confronting criminals, a survey has found.
Research by Halifax Home Insurance suggests that almost 630,000 people confronted a criminal in their neighbourhood last year.
A further 800,000 tried to scare a criminal away, instead of picking up the phone to call the police.
Martyn Foulds, senior claims manager at Halifax Home Insurance, said that people can help to prevent crime by looking out for their neighbours.
However, he warned: "There is a fine line between intervening and risking your own safety and we would urge homeowners to report anything suspicious to the professionals and leave it to them to take direct action."
Recent research by Yorkshire Bank Home Insurance revealed that Hartlepool has seen the biggest reduction in burglaries across England and Wales since 2002.
The number of reported burglaries in the County Durham town has fallen by 65% in the past eight years, while the East Sussex town of Eastbourne recorded a 63% reduction.
