Holidaymakers neglect to protect electronic kit

Electronic kit needs covering by travel insurance.
The average holidaymaker takes electronic kit to the value of £424 away with them, yet many fail to protect their possessions with travel insurance.

That is according to travel insurance firm AXA, which points out that phones, laptops, MP3 players, cameras and camcorders are commonly taken on holiday.

Research conducted by the company suggests that of the £7bn worth of belongings taken away by Britons, up to £1.61bn is not protected by travel insurance.

This is because only 77% of holidaymakers take out insurance and just 49% have home insurance that protects their personal possessions outside the home.

Amanda Edwards, a spokeswoman for AXA Home Insurance, claimed: "Personal possessions cover is more important than ever these days.

"Our lifestyles are changing and we are carrying more and more high-value, electronic items with us when we leave our homes - not just when we go on holiday."

The survey also found that 29% of people pack high-value items in their hold luggage, which could invalidate their travel insurance in the event of loss or damage.

Meanwhile, holidaymakers have been reminded not to hide spare house keys in obvious places, such as under the doormat, by insurance firm More Than.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19908617-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
