People who are considering health insurance should not be afraid to attend free NHS health checks, experts have said.

Health Insurance magazine asked three underwriters whether the results of free health checks, such as those designed to identify people at risk of stroke, type-2 diabetes and heart disease, would have a negative effect on an individual's health insurance quote.

The overwhelming response was that people should not be deterred from attending NHS screening.

Phil Brown, head of underwriting at Zurich, told the publication that screening should be seen as a "positive first step".

"If an adverse finding is discovered, then the early intervention, health management and advice benefits will outweigh any insurance implications," he pointed out.

Mr Brown also noted that only a "relatively small proportion" of health insurance applicants receive an inflated quote, while the proportion who are declined is "very small".

Mike Taylor, chief underwriter for AXA Protection, added that the NHS health screening programme could ultimately have a positive effect on the pricing of health insurance, as it should lead to a decline in mortality rates.

Under the NHS Health Checks programme, which was launched in England in March 2009, patients between the ages of 40 and 74 are invited for a free check-up to determine whether they are at risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, kidney disease and other illnesses.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19613838-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
