Health insurance firm warns of recession stress
01 February 2010 17:05:36
The recession has been a major source of stress.
Almost a quarter of businesses believe recent economic conditions have had a lasting effect on their employees' stress levels, a survey by health insurance provider Aviva has found.
The insurer commissioned a poll of 500 employers and 1,000 employees, which revealed that many businesses blame the recession for an increase in the number of long-term absences.
Dr Doug Wright, principal clinical consultant at Aviva UK Health, said that work can be stressful at times and urged employers to keep an eye out for the early warning signs of stress so that it can be managed.
"Psychological issues such as stress consistently rank top among the causes of long-term absence, according to claims data from our group risk team, ahead of musculoskeletal disorders and life-threatening conditions such as cancer," Dr Wright revealed.
However, he noted that early identification and treatment of stress "is possible and has extremely positive results".
NHS experts recommend a number of self-help methods to prevent stress, including deep breathing techniques, healthy eating, exercise, a regular sleep pattern and dedicated relaxation time.
