Govt reveals plans to overhaul ATOL holiday scheme

Millions more holidays could soon benefit from ATOL protection.
Millions of travel insurance customers could soon benefit from plans to modernise the Air Travel Organisers' Licensing (ATOL) holiday protection scheme.
Under the ATOL scheme, Britons who book a package holiday enjoy financial protection in the event that their holiday company collapses.
However, the number of holidays that fall outside the existing scheme has risen in recent years and many consumers have been left without cover.
The government is now consulting on proposals that could see an extra 6m holidays covered by ATOL.
Aviation minister Theresa Villiers said: "While the chances of a holiday company going under are thankfully very low, the impact on those affected can be significant.
"Recent years have highlighted not only how important financial protection is to holidaymakers, but also the fact that the ATOL scheme is in urgent need of reform."
Meanwhile, Northern Irish health minister Edwin Poots has urged holidaymakers to take out travel insurance before heading overseas and to carry a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) if visiting Europe.
"We never know when ill health may strike, so it is vitally important that we all take responsibility for our own health when travelling and are able to access any treatment or care that may become necessary during a trip away," he advised.
