Gas and electricity market competition increases
Gas and electricity market competition increases
16 October 2009 17:17:17
Three cheap gas and electricity tariffs have been launched.
Several new low-cost tariffs have been launched by UK gas and electricity firms, as competition in the energy sector heats up.
E.ON has announced a cut in its FixOnline 3 internet-only deal, bringing the average annual bill for dual fuel customers down by £19 to £962 per year.
However, this was then undercut by First Utility, whose new iSave dual fuel deal typically comes to £954.
Mark Daeche, First Utility's chief executive, said: "[This] demonstrates our commitment to UK consumers and to maintaining our position as the challenger in the UK energy marketplace."
These moves follow the launch of Scottish Power's new Online Energy Saver 7, which offers customers average annual costs of £973, late last month.
All of these deals are available to internet customers only.
Recent forecasts from Ofgem indicate that the average UK gas and electricity bill is likely to rise sharply over the years to come, due to the cost of environmental programmes and future supply constrictions.
A temporary price spike of 60% in bills within the next decade was also forecast by the watchdog as part of a worst-case scenario.
