More households falling behind on energy bill payments.
As many as 300,000 Britons have fallen behind on their gas and electric payments in the past year, according to a new report.
Energy watchdog Ofgem confirmed that households have been struggling to pay off their bills in the past 12 months and are now a combined £630m in the red.
The study found that the number of electricity customers failing to cover their energy expenses increased to 1.4 million by September 2009, representing a rise of 100,000 from a year earlier.
In addition, the combination of rising energy prices and the recession saw a further 200,000 Britons being plunged into gas bill debt, pushing the total up to 1.2 million.
According to Ofgem, the average level of debt for households currently in arrears has risen by £22 and £62 for gas and electricity respectively.
Earlier this week, Ofgem announced that it is set to invest £319m in order to connect six renewable energy products to the National Grid before the end of the 2010-11 financial year.
