Gas and electric customers urged to seek help
16 March 2010 12:58:41
More people likely to struggle with gas and electric costs.
People who are unable to afford to pay their gas and electric bills have been advised to seek help from their suppliers, rather than switch off heating in cold weather.
While it is likely that the number of people classed as being in fuel poverty will increase in the future, it is vital that consumers tackle the problem by ensuring they are on affordable gas and electric tariffs.
"If people are faced with bills that they can't pay it is important to contact their energy supplier immediately to discuss payment options," said Ron Campbell, head of campaigns, policy, information and research at campaign group National Energy Action.
"Meanwhile, help is available to make energy costs more affordable through energy efficiency improvements and through social tariffs offered by energy suppliers."
He added that more than 5 million people are currently in fuel poverty, meaning more than 10% of a household's income is being spent on gas and electricity.
All of the 'big six' energy providers have announced similar price cuts over February and March. Watchdog Consumer Focus has called for an investigation into whether there is sufficient competition in the energy market as "all suppliers now cut by almost identical margins within days of each other".
