Insurance provider Churchill has advised homeowners to be careful tomorrow (Friday the 13th) to avoid making a home insurance claim.

According to data analysed by the firm, claims for damage to household items on the last Friday the 13th in February rose by a fifth when compared with the previous two Fridays.

Items broken included sinks, toilets and mirrors - which for the superstitious bring even more bad luck.

Additionally, the number of claims for damage to pipes and cables rose by a quarter, with freezer breakdown claims up by 100%.

"Householders should keep hold of their lucky charms this Friday 13th as our analysis shows that it really can be unlucky for some," said Martin Scott, head of home insurance at Churchill.

"However, having accidental damage cover on your home insurance can go some way to minimising the stress and financial burden of having an accident in the home."
