Football fans urged to plan travel insurance

Travel insurance should be booked well in advance.
Travellers who plan to attend the football World Cup in South Africa this year have been advised to purchase travel insurance as soon as possible.
Travel insurance needs to be in place well in advance if cancellations due to redundancy or illness are to be covered.
According to Direct Travel Insurance, the average claim for cancelling or cutting short a trip to South Africa last year was £1,591 per person.
That means that anyone without the best travel insurance could be left seriously out of pocket if they have to cancel their trip unexpectedly.
The company also revealed that the average claim for lost or damaged baggage in South Africa came to £252, while the highest medical claim exceeded £27,000.
Paul Thilo, vice-president of consumer marketing at Direct Travel Insurance, observed: "The price of quality travel insurance is very small when you consider the cost of replacing stolen items and medical bills.
"I would advise football fans heading to South Africa this summer to assess carefully what they wish to be covered for and not simply consider insurance as an optional extra."
The World Cup is set to kick off on June 11th 2010, when host nation South Africa will take on Mexico at the newly reconstructed Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg.
