It has been announced that Bournemouth is to become the first town in the UK to have super-fast broadband installed using an underground network of fibre in sewers.
Over 88,000 homes and businesses in the seaside town are set to benefit from download speeds of up to 100Mbps (megabits per second).
The £30 million project will be funded by H20 Networks Ltd with the fibre set to be laid in the next six months.
Further towns that will have super-fast broadband installed are set to be announced in the near future.
Elfed Thomas, CEO of H20 Networks, said: “This is just the start of bringing next generation connectivity to the UK.
“Many households and broadband customers in the UK have insufficient connectivity bandwidths because they are attached to legacy networks deployed in the 20th Century that just can’t cope with demand.”
Some of the benefits of super-fast broadband include the ability to support on-demand high definition TV, CCTV home surveillance, quality DVD downloads in just minutes and HD gaming.
Additionally, because the UK’s 360,000 miles of sewers are already installed, roads do not have to be dug up to lay the fibres meaning that it is cheaper and more environmentally friendly.
