Final 'big six' energy supplier cuts gas bills

Scottish Power is cutting gas bills by 8%.
Scottish Power has become the last of the 'big six' energy suppliers to cut gas bills.
The company announced that it will cut gas bills by 8%, on average, from March 31st.
Around 1.6 million gas and electric customers will benefit from the decision, which follows similar price cuts by the other leading energy suppliers, British Gas, EDF Energy, E.ON, npower and Scottish and Southern Energy.
Suppliers have been criticised for failing to reflect falling wholesale oil and gas prices in the tariffs they offer to customers.
However, Raymond Jack, director of energy retail at Scottish Power, defended the company, telling the BBC that less than 60% of an energy bill is based on wholesale costs.
"Investment, government obligations and the delivery of energy to the home make up a significant portion of our bills," he explained.
Alison Morrison, head of switching at consumer watchdog Which?, said that people should compare gas prices now that all of the 'big six' have cut their tariffs and consider moving to a cheaper deal.
