Fees review 'could increase student costs'
Fees review 'could increase student costs'
10 November 2009 09:18:32
Tuition fees for students are to be investigated.
The leader of a new investigation looking into possible changes in the way students will be charged for their studies has been announced.
Lord Browne, the former chief executive of BP, will head a seven-strong team of experts who will consider various aspects of student finances.
Tuition fees, which cost the typical student in England over £3,000 per year, will come under the review's remit.
One potential outcome of the investigation is that an increase to the fees could be recommended.
Recent figures from Compass, a campaigns group, showed that just 12% of the British public believe the student funding review should consider these increases.
Lord Mandelson, the business secretary, said that the team would examine the "balance of contributions to universities by taxpayers, students, graduates and employers".
Responding to the news, the National Union of Students (NUS) said that the review could "pave the way" for higher student fees.
Wes Streeting, NUS president, added: "Members of the review should be in no doubt about the scale of public opposition to a hike in fees and the level of student anger about the extent of our indebtedness and the marketisation of our education."
The team will release their findings after the next general election.
