Ex-burglars give tips to home insurance customers

Social media platforms are useful for burglars.
Reformed burglars have provided some usual information for householders who are keen to make their property less attractive to criminals.
Home insurance provider More Than has carried out research among ex-burglars, which found that the ideal profile for a break-in victim is someone who lives in a detached home or bungalow, has an attractive car and keeps their jewellery in their bedside drawer.
The insurer also learnt that householders can reduce their chances of falling victim to burglary by refraining from revealing their whereabouts on social media websites.
More Than spokesman Pete Markey observed that burglars "still use tried and tested methods when it comes to breaking into properties", but are "keeping up with the times too".
"Using Facebook or Twitter to boast about a big night out or a fortnight in Barbados may impress friends and colleagues, but it's enough to give the social media-savvy burglar all they need to know," he pointed out.
Homeowners have also been advised to take steps to protect the contents of their garden, after a survey by M&S Money found that 49% of people do not always lock their sheds.
