EDF Energy has announced that it will be introducing a new off-peak electricity tariff which it says will help millions of Britons who can only fit in their housework during the evenings and weekends.

The new tariff, Eco 20:20 will offer electricity that is 20% cheaper when used after 9pm on weekdays and all weekend.

According to the energy company’s estimates this could save customers £35 a year if they switch over to the tariff.

A poll conducted by EDF Energy found that 67 per cent of more than 2,000 people polled said they did their washing, vacuuming and ironing during the evenings or over the weekend.

A quarter of respondents said they vacuum their homes during the weekend and turn their washing machines on after 9pm during Monday to Friday.

Martin Stead, brand director at EDF Energy, said: “These finding demonstrate that there is a real need to a product like Eco20:20 that can fit around our busy lifestyles.”
