Early start for pothole car insurance claims
08 February 2010 10:11:35
Potholes are a common cause of car insurance claims.
There have already been a large number of car insurance claims citing pothole-related damage, AA Insurance has revealed.
The insurer said that the pothole season had arrived early this year, bringing a fourfold increase in the number of related claims compared with the same period in 2009.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, pointed out that many claims are not justified as the cost of repairing the damage may actually be less than the loss of a no-claims bonus and insurance excess.
"It would take a quarry-like pothole to cause the sort of damage that would justify an insurance claim, but there are certainly some 'A-list' holes out there," he revealed.
"But more commonly, our customers have either tried to avoid a pothole and hit something else, such as a kerb, or hitting a hole has caused them to momentarily lose control and hit another vehicle or object."
The AA has urged the government to invest in the country's roads in order to prevent pothole damage to cars, which can include problems with steering and suspension.
The Institution of Civil Engineers recently called for "more planned, preventative road maintenance", as short-term solutions have failed to withstand recent weather conditions.
