Drivers should make sure their car is ready before setting off on summer road trips, a national breakdown cover firm has said.

GEM Motoring Assist has provided some helpful advice to ensure drivers are prepared before leaving home on their summer holidays.

David Williams, chief executive at the breakdown cover firm, observed that a growing number of Britons are choosing to book holidays in destinations that can be reached by car.

"This will, however, mean a greater number of people on the roads that are unfamiliar with certain areas and the varying laws across Europe," he pointed out.

"It is extremely important that drivers realise the necessity to ensure their car has been completely checked before setting off on a long journey."

GEM Motoring Assist advises drivers to ensure they have adequate breakdown cover, including protection that is valid in Europe if necessary.

In the event of breakdown, drivers should try to get their vehicle off the road and make their passengers safe, as well as switching on the car's hazard lights and placing a warning triangle on the road.

In some countries, it is illegal not to wear a reflective jacket or tabard during a breakdown and drivers should always move with extreme caution if they wish to leave their car.

Figures published in 2009 by insurer Aviva revealed that Germany and France are the most expensive places in which to break down in continental Europe.ADNFCR-2196-ID-800010772-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
