Drivers should check vehicles' car insurance groups before buying.
Motorists who plan to buy a new vehicle have been urged to compare car insurance and finance quotes before making a decision, as the move could save them money.
Car insurance provider esure found that 33% of motorists would not dream of haggling on their next car purchase, while 47% admitted that they never research different types of finance or credit deals when buying a new vehicle.
The company's study also revealed that 8% of drivers would not get a car insurance quote before choosing a new vehicle, while 16% do not even bother to find out a vehicle's insurance group before agreeing a sale.
This means that motorists could be left seriously out of pocket when it comes to purchasing the necessary car insurance.
Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting at esure car insurance, said that shopping around is "key", as savings are "there to be had".
"Whether it's the insurance cover, finance package or the price tag of a new set of wheels, motorists should spend a little extra time doing their homework beforehand to make sure they get a good deal," he insisted.
Meanwhile, research by motor insurer Direct Line suggests that 69% of drivers would support an increase in the number of penalty points awarded to motorists who are caught using a mobile phone while driving.
