Customers 'must learn from energy smart meters'

Smart meters can help to reduce gas and electric bills.
Customers will only see the benefits of smart meters if they utilise them to adjust their gas and electric usage, an expert has claimed.
The devices are gradually being introduced into British households and should help to reduce gas and electric bills.
However, they are no magic bullet, according to industry insiders.
"If I gave you a smart meter now, you wouldn't save a penny," a spokesman for npower said in an interview with the Observer.
"It's about encouraging you to interact with it and that's what energy companies need to be doing. The benefits will only come when you start paying attention to it."
UK households will all have smart meters by the end of 2020, according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change.
Energy minister Lord Hunt said in December 2009 that all of us need to "change how we lead our lives" in order to meet global climate commitments and that the meters would "put the power in people's hands".
