Cruise customers urged to check travel insurance

Cruises may not be covered by standard travel insurance.
People who plan to take a cruise ship holiday this year should ensure they have the correct travel insurance.
While the holidays are growing in popularity and becoming more mainstream, insurance companies often regard them as high-risk and may not include them under their standard cover.
This means that families who do not take the time to read the small print when they compare travel insurance quotes may find themselves without valid cover when they set sail.
A representative of AA Travel Insurance observed: "Cruise ship customers often overlook the fact that cruises may not be included as standard on cheaper travel insurance policies, which are designed to cover land-based holidays.
"As a result, they may not be properly covered and could end up footing the bill for expensive medical treatment."
A recent report from the Passenger Shipping Association predicted that 1.65m Britons would choose a cruise holiday this year, up 6.5% from 2009.
