Crime stats may ease reliance on home insurance

Crime figures are good news for home insurance customers.
A recent fall in the number of crimes in England and Wales is likely to be welcomed by home insurance customers.
New figures show that the total number of offences reported to police fell by 8% despite the recession, with police forces in England and Wales recording overall falls in burglary, robbery and violent crime in the third quarter of 2009.
The number of domestic break-ins fell by 8% between July and September, bringing the total down to 64,200.
Car thefts were also down by one-fifth, but there was a 7% increase in the number of bike thefts.
Home secretary Alan Johnson welcomed the figures, saying: "Given the tough economic conditions, these crime statistics are all the more impressive and a tribute to police forces across the country."
The safest county between October 1st 2008 and September 30th 2009 was Norfolk, where crime fell by 8.4%.
However, while criminal damage, drugs offences and vehicle crime all dropped, the county experienced a 15% increase in burglaries and a 5% rise in robberies.
Detective chief superintendent Julian Blazeby said that the small rise in acquisitive crime was anticipated "not only in Norfolk, but across the country as a result of the economic climate".
Even though the suspected crime wave has not yet materialised, 2010 is forecast to be tough on personal incomes, making home insurance a vital measure to protect against burglary.
