Credit card fraud operation ringleaders are caught by investigators.
Three men allegedly responsible for a huge credit card fraud operation have been arrested by Spanish police, it was confirmed yesterday (March 3rd).
The hackers developed a botnet known as 'Mariposa', which has stolen credit card and online banking details from up to 12.7m computers since December 2008.
According to investigators, a huge number of the infected PCs belonged to 500 of the US Fortune 1,000 companies and more than 40 major banks.
Cesar Lorenza, a captain with Spain's Guardia Civil, revealed in an interview with the Associated Press that the men, who have not been named, are not typical cybercriminals.
"They're not like these people from the Russian mafia or eastern European mafia who like to have sports cars and good watches and good suits," he told the news provider.
"The most frightening thing is they are normal people who are earning a lot of money with cybercrime."
Meanwhile, Renukanth Subramaniam, the ringleader of DarkMarket, an online supermarket for credit card fraudsters, has been jailed for almost five years.
