Couples urged to avoid Valentine's Day breakdowns

A breakdown could ruin a romantic weekend.
Couples across the country will be setting off on romantic getaways later this month, but a breakdown cover provider has warned that many trips could be ruined without a little routine vehicle maintenance.
GEM Motoring Assist has advised drivers to take time to check their vehicles before travelling, as an untimely breakdown could put a serious dampener on Valentine's Day.
Motorists should also keep an eye out for icy roads and avoid dirt tracks and unfamiliar country roads.
The company recommends keeping emergency supplies in the boot of the car and a charged mobile phone to hand in case of a crash or breakdown.
David Williams, chief executive officer of GEM, commented: "We are urging romantics looking to travel on Valentine's weekend to be cautious this year as no one wants to be caught out in an embarrassing spot with their partner.
"After all, the hard shoulder of a motorway or being stuck in the middle of nowhere is hardly the most romantic gesture."
The AA recently revealed that its workers had attended around 544,000 breakdowns since the start of severe wintry weather on December 17th.
