Car insurer urges parents to take responsibility

Practising with parents produces safer drivers.
Parents should take more responsibility for teenage drivers and ensure they get enough practice before taking their driving test, car insurance provider Aviva has claimed.
According to the insurer, young drivers are 17% more likely to pass their test on the first attempt if they have practised driving with their parents.
In contrast, half of young drivers who only get behind the wheel during paid driving lessons take their test more than four times before passing.
Accident figures also reflect the important role parents can play, revealing that over a quarter of young drivers who do not practise with their parents have at least one accident within their first year on the road.
Aviva motoring expert Nigel Bartram commented: "Our research shows that young drivers who gain valuable experience behind the wheel under the guidance of their parents are much more likely to pass their driving test first time around than those who only take paid-for driving lessons.
"The more experience young drivers can accrue behind the wheel, the better drivers they will be, especially if they are practising driving at night and driving in different weather conditions."
A recent analysis of AA Insurance customers revealed that almost a quarter of 25 to 34-year-old men had at least one motoring conviction.
