Road rage claims about 800 lives a year, according to research by car insurance provider AXA.

The insurer's study revealed that 35% of drivers involved in a serious accident felt angry or frightened because of another driver in the seconds leading up to the incident.

It believes that, by encouraging motorists to drive more considerately, it may be possible to prevent many of the deaths that occur on Britain's roads.

In addition, AXA suggests that consumers' car insurance premiums would come down, as approximately £35 of each driver's annual premium goes towards paying for road rage-related accidents.

Craig Staniland, AXA director for motor insurance, revealed: "We are very concerned that a continued lack of respect on the road will drive up premiums further.

"Personal injury costs are escalating as it is - if we can cut back the number of accidents involving personal injury through a less aggressive and more considerate approach to the way we drive, then it will be to the benefit of all drivers."

Mr Staniland warned that if premiums continue to rise, more drivers will decide not to compare car insurance policies and will hit the roads without purchasing the necessary cover.

Meanwhile, a study by Admiral has found that 19% of drivers believe the legal driving age should be raised to 21 or older to improve road safety.ADNFCR-2196-ID-800010765-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
