Campaigners demand end to fuel poverty

Campaigners want concerted action against fuel poverty.
A coalition of campaign organisations has called for an end to fuel poverty in the UK.
Groups such as Age Concern and Help the Aged, Consumer Focus and National Energy Action have launched a charter of measures which need to be taken if the "scandal" is to be addressed.
There are major concerns that the government's target to end fuel poverty by 2016 will not be met unless a new strategy is formulated.
About 6.6m UK households are currently struggling to pay their gas and electric bills, while many are cutting back on heating to keep costs down.
Jonathan Stearn, an energy expert at Consumer Focus, called for "concerted action" to address the problem.
"Any political party serious about ending the hardship millions of fuel-poor households are facing must commit to make fuel-poor homes as energy-efficient as those built today," he argued.
A spokesman for National Energy Action recently warned that households may encounter higher gas and electric bills in the future.
Ron Campbell, the organisation's head of campaigns, policy, information and research, advised: "If people are faced with bills that they can't pay, it is important to contact their energy supplier immediately to discuss payment options."
