Broadband providers face Ofcom probe over speeds

Broadband speeds are to be put under the microscope.
Broadband providers are set to be put to the test over their advertised 'super-fast' connection speeds, it has been confirmed.
Communications regulator Ofcom is planning to monitor thousands of UK homes to ensure that companies' claims about speed are actually achievable in reality.
In order to carry out the two-year campaign effectively, the watchdog confirmed that it has joined forces with broadband testing and technology company SamKnows.
"What we're looking to measure in the forthcoming project is how this ISP performance will improve as consumers switch to services which are being advertised as significantly faster," said Alex Salter, chief executive of SamKnows.
The latest project comes after a similar Ofcom initiative previously found that providers claiming to offer speeds of 'up to 8Mb' were actually achieving 3.9Mb at best.
Meanwhile, Ed Richards, chief executive of Ofcom, told the Financial Times this week that the watchdog is set to scrutinise the regulation of 'net neutrality' this year.
