Broadband connection 'can help to make savings'

Low-income families need the opportunity to have broadband connections.
Broadband provision for some of the country's poorer families should be a major priority for the government, it was suggested yesterday (March 9th).
Consumer Focus compiled a report, entitled 'Broadband Minded', which polled Britons earning less than £11,500 per year for their views on the internet.
The results showed that attempting to save money by using online services had "little relevance" for many low-income homes as they lack debit cards or bank accounts.
With that in mind, the watchdog has urged the government to promote television and internet on-demand facilities, and websites such as eBay, for their cost-effectiveness.
Consumer Focus chief executive Mike O'Connor explained that the study also noted that cost is "not the only issue" involved in getting less wealthy households online.
"If the government wants more people online they need to deal with consumers' fears about the internet such as the dangers of identity theft and viruses," he said.
The findings of the report will be presented to Digital Britain minister Stephen Timms, who recently vowed to get an extra 7.5 million Britons online by 2014.
