Britons who plan to travel over the festive period have been urged not to broadcast their holiday plans online.

AA Home Insurance issued the warning after a study found that about 10% of social media users in Ireland have mentioned their travel plans online at some point.

The insurer pointed out that this information could easily fall into the wrong hands, alerting burglars to the location of empty homes.

John Farrell, director of AA Insurance, told the Irish Journal: "There are a lot of images of people's Christmas trees and outdoor Christmas lights going up on the likes of Facebook at the moment.

"It's wonderful to spread the Christmas cheer but just be careful - if you haven't adjusted your security settings,  you could be sharing your house number, house name, vehicle registration and even street sign with people you simply don't know."

The issue is thought to be particularly relevant to teenage internet users, as the AA Home Insurance survey that more than 42% of 17 to 24-year-olds regularly broadcast their travel plans online.

Meanwhile, home insurance provider Swinton has urged parents to consider taking out accidental damage cover in time for Christmas.

Its research found that 23% of incidents that occurred on Christmas morning last year involved games consoles, followed by 13% caused by footballs and other outdoor equipment.ADNFCR-2196-ID-801243470-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
