More than 8 million Britons have revealed their debit and credit card PIN number to a friend or relative in the last 12 months.

That is according to a new survey from LV= home insurance, which found that almost a quarter (24%) of these customers had fallen victim to ID fraud.

Common reasons for revealing PINs included asking others to make payments and purchases, or take out cash from an ATM on the cardholder's behalf.

One in three Britons said that they have been asked to do this, with partners and spouses being the most likely to be relied upon for these tasks, followed by children and parents.

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= home insurance, said: "We would strongly urge all card users not to tell anyone their PIN number.

"Not only does it undermine the security of your account and increases the risk of ID fraud but also cardholders could end up out of pocket if they are found to have shared their card details."

Earlier this year, research by CIFAS found that there had been a 40% increase in cases of ID fraud between January and March over the corresponding period in 2008.
