Consumers have been reminded to shield their pin whenever they use an ATM to withdraw money from their bank account.

Cash machine network LINK has released video footage showing criminals obtaining customers' pin numbers.

A skimming device is attached to the card entry slot to obtain information from the card's magnetic strip, while a tiny camera overlooks the ATM's keypad and records the customer's pin as it is entered.

However, the footage clearly shows that, by shielding the keypad with their free hand, customers can block the camera's view and protect their money.

Edwin Schooling Latter, managing director of LINK Scheme, commented: "Incidences of cash machine crime may be few and far between but it is very difficult for a member of the public to tell if an ATM has been targeted or not.

"The best thing to do is always to be on the safe side and shield the keypad whenever you enter your pin."

Figures from fraud prevention service CIFAS show that, from January to June 2010, there were 24,491 cases of misuse of facility fraud, in which an individual's bank account, insurance policy or other facility was used fraudulently.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19911152-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
