This winter was an expensive one for motorists.
British drivers have racked up a bill in excess of £1.9bn as a result of the recent harsh weather conditions, according to RAC.

The breakdown cover and insurance provider revealed that damage caused by pot-holes, as well as the need for frequent trips to carwashes and large quantities of de-icer, contributed to an expensive winter for motorists.

A survey by the company found that 46% of drivers spent more on car maintenance this winter than in 2008-09.

RAC Insurance also revealed that it dealt with a 30% increase in motor claims during the coldest spells in December and January.

Despite the harsh conditions, the company found that just 5% of motorists plan to take their cars for an extra service this spring.

Mark Godfrey, head of RAC Insurance, advised: "Spring is not the time to shun essential car maintenance. Just as people are readying for a good spring clean of their homes, it's time to check over the car too."

The expert pointed out that well-maintained vehicles are less likely to be involved in accidents and that some cars may not be ready for the road following the recent adverse weather conditions.

RAC attends over 2.7m breakdowns each year and dealt with almost 80,000 call-outs in the eight days prior to Christmas.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19677128-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
