Break-ins 'soar after clock change'
Experts predict 25% rise in burglaries when clocks go back

Burglaries are set to soar by 25% when the clocks go back, experts predict.

And some 2.5 million British households do not have adequate protection against theft, according to research from comparethemarket.

A spokesman for the website said: "For most good citizens, the clocks going back this Sunday means nothing more than an extra hour in bed.

"But for the seasonally-savvy burglar it means an even easier time when it comes to burgling our property."

More than 25% of people either leave the back or side door unlocked, the research found, while one in five leave the window open or often leave a house key under a flowerpot or doormat.

However, separate research suggests that contemporary burglars might not operate in such dark conditions as their predecessors.

Almost two thirds of people believe the night sky is lighter than a decade ago, a survey by lighting specialists Abacus Lighting found.
