Consumers look to internet for savings
Move over, David Dickinson – make room on that television screen for a new professional bargain hunter: the cash-strapped British consumer.
Research from Santander has revealed a far thriftier attitude among shoppers, many of whom are now comparing prices online as a normal procedure before hitting the high street.
A practice that was once reserved for expensive gadgets and mobile phone tariffs is now being used to make savings on everything, from insurance and groceries to holidays and everyday essentials.
But the survey found that the extra effort certainly pays off, with consumers saving an average of £346 in the past year.
Santander has even set up a Facebook page for people to share their money-saving tips, including places where they might find the best deals on fake tan (there's one for you, Dickinson).
Savvy shoppers continue to drive the cost down across the country but it seems that we could all learn a thing or two from Birmingham, where the average spender pocketed £528 a year by making their money go further.
Those in Bristol, Newcastle and Leeds also deserve a round of applause for making savings above £400 through a bit of research.
But although Brits are doing particularly well reducing their average grocery bill (which made up the majority of the savings), Santander said that people were largely ignoring the savings they could potentially make on banking and financial products.
By approaching their credit cards and bank accounts with the same level of care that they approach their shopping baskets, customers might find themselves with even more cash in their pockets – always welcome when there's a recession on.
Why not make a start with the plastic in your pocket? Get onto your favourite credit card comparison site and see what kind of savings you can make. Take a hint from those lads and lasses in Birmingham!
