Barclaycard announces credit card reward scheme

The company has revealed that 'Barclaycard Freedom', which is being described as the largest loyalty scheme of its type ever witnessed in the UK, will commence in March.
Under the terms of the scheme, existing Barclaycard credit card holders will receive 'Reward Money' of 1% for the majority of transactions made at participating retailers.
"The breadth of Barclaycard Freedom offers customers the chance to earn Reward Money when they do their weekly shop, go out for a meal or shop online," said Sarah Newman, managing director of Barclaycard Freedom.
"It incorporates all of the best elements of other reward schemes and with no need to collect and save vouchers, [as] the rewards will be in pounds and pence."
Barclaycard also confirmed that 30,000 retailers are expected to join the scheme, meaning its average credit card holder should live within five miles of 200 participating outlets.
Last week, Barclaycard launched a new advert promoting the benefits of contactless credit card payments.
