Aerobic exercise 'may not benefit all'

Genes may affect how people benefit from exercise.
Aerobic exercise may not be beneficial for people with a certain genetic makeup, according to new research findings that are likely to surprise some health insurance providers.

Scientists at the Royal Veterinary College at the University of London asked volunteers to undergo rigorous aerobic training in order to study the benefits.

They found that nearly one-fifth of participants barely improved the amount of oxygen they used, which is an important indicator of aerobic fitness.

Furthermore, nearly 30% showed no improvement in their insulin sensitivity, which suggests that the training had no effect on their risk of developing diabetes.

James Timmons, who led the study, believes that a person's genes may determine the amount they benefit from exercise.

He claimed that doctors may soon be able to personalise exercise programmes to reduce an individual's risk of heart disease.

"This would be one of the first examples of personalised, genomic-based medicine," he revealed.

The discovery, which is published in the Journal of Applied Physiology, may be of interest to health insurers such as PruHealth and Aviva, both of which reward policyholders who do plenty of exercise.ADNFCR-2196-ID-19606973-ADNFCR ADNFCR-2196-ID-19464191-ADNFCR
