Tobogganing may not be covered by standard travel insurance policies.
More than one-third of British adults would try out an extreme winter sport without first checking their travel insurance policies, a survey has found.
Researchers for esure questioned 1,004 holidaymakers and found that 34% would take their chances, while 13% assumed that all activities at ski resorts, such as skiing, tobogganing and ice-skating, would automatically be covered.
Mike Pickard, head of travel insurance at esure, claimed that the imminent Winter Olympics in Vancouver would foster interest in extreme winter sports.
"If you are tempted to try something new it's crucial to have quality travel insurance and to read the small print to check what you're covered for," he advised.
"If in doubt, call your insurer or consider leaving it to the professionals rather than risk facing a hefty medical bill if you were injured."
The insurance company warned that use of a 'blood-wagon' to rescue unfortunate winter sports enthusiasts typically costs around £200, while evacuation by helicopter could easily leave the casualty with a bill for £1,500.
Virgin Money recently revealed that skiers on a budget should consider heading to Slovakia, where some of the cheapest holidays on the slopes are currently available.
