There are a number of features you can look at when you compare credit cards, but the features you need to consider will differ according to your needs.

Therefore, before you start comparing credit cards, you will first need to decide why you need a credit card and what you need from it.

If you need to transfer existing debt, you will likely be looking for the card with one of the longest 0% balance transfer offers and also the cheapest balance transfer admin fee.

If you need to make a large purchase on credit, you will likely be looking for a card with a decent 0% on purchases offer.

However, you may just want to have a credit card for convenience and so would probably compare credit cards with rewards or cashback so that you get the most out of your credit card use. In this instance you would probably be interested in the card offering the lowest typical APR so that you know your purchases won’t cost you more in interest than the rewards you are likely to earn.

There are a few things to bear in mind no matter what your reason for applying for a credit card.

Before you start your credit card comparison, check to see if you are old enough to apply for the card and if you have the minimum annual income. Also, consider whether the card is likely to accept you based on your credit history. Platinum credit cards won’t be an option if you have a bad credit history but there are credit building cards to compare if you do.
