Investment ISAs

The abbreviation ISA stands for Individual Savings Account. An investment ISA is also sometimes called a stocks and shares ISA. This type of savings account lets you invest your money in a range of different funds that may have different objectives. Investment ISAs can be a very tax-friendly way to invest, regardless of whether your goal is growth or regular income. This is a very flexible investment that lets you fine tune your savings. When you open or add to your investment ISA, you can invest with the goal of growth, income, or a mixture of both, and any returns are free from UK capital gains and income tax. However, you must keep in mind that the underlying funds of your ISA may have to pay tax, and those taxes cannot be reclaimed.

As of April 6th 2011, the annual ISA investment allowance is a maximum of £10,680. Up to half that amount can be put into a cash ISA. The rest can be invested in a Stocks and Shares ISA, and it may be provided by the same provider as the cash ISA, or a different one. But you don't have to put any into a cash ISA if you don't want to. You can put the full amount into a Stocks and Shares ISA that's administered by one provider.

If you choose to open an investment ISA, you should consider it to be a mid- to long-term investment. And like any investment, it can go up and down in value, and it isn't guaranteed. With an investment ISA, it is possible, though not likely, that you could ultimately get back less than the value of your original investment. Changes in tax rules are another possibility with this type of investment. However, the goal of the investment ISA is to provide high returns over the mid- to long term. Keep in mind that if you need easy access to your money, then an investment ISA may not be the right investment choice for you.
