Health Insurance FAQs

Q: If I take out a private medical insurance will I still be able to go to an NHS hospital in an emergency?

A: Yes.  Medical Insurance is seen as complimenting the NHS treatment rather than replacing it. You can still choose to be treated under the NHS and in fact most private insurance does not cover emergency care.

Q: If I have to have an operation but the NHS can’t do it for at least 2 years can I get medical insurance to cover it?

A: If you have a pre-existing condition that you are waiting to be treated for you will almost certainly not be able to get insurance cover for it.

Q: Will I be covered if I travel abroad?

A: Most policies have foreign travel additions so you’d need to check your policy

Q: I don’t want to give up my NHS dentist but even though he’s NHS I still get a bill for x-rays when I go can that be covered by insurance?

A: Yes, most dental plans cover 100% of charges after an NHS dental visit

Q: can my whole family be covered by a medical insurance policy or do they all have to have separate policies?

A: You will be able to find a wide choice of family policies available and they can provide comparatively good value

Q: If you have private medical cover do you have to use the insurance company’s hospital?

A: In most cases having full private health insurance provides a greater degree of choice.  It will depend on the level of cover you have choose, so for instance some of the most expensive hospitals in London may not be included if you don’t select the highest level of cover.

Q: How much does medical insurance cost?

A: That very much depends on the level of cover you want and your personal health profile.  There is an enormous range so the only way to really know is to get a quote based on your details
