Gilt-edged stocks (gilts)

Gilts are fixed income, or index-linked, bonds issued by the UK Government.

If you buy a gilt, you lend the government money. In return you get regular interest payments and the assurance that the whole nominal value of the gilt will be repaid on a later specified date.
