Gas and Electric FAQs

Q: It seems like it would be hard but just how difficult is it to change gas supplier?

A: These days it’s usually a very easy process. If you switch online there is minimal paperwork and all you’ll see is a change in your billing.

Q: If I take a fixed unit price for a year on my gas and I then decide to switch what happens?

A: Part of a fixed rate deal is usually a contract that you are tied to for a set amount of time or there will be penalties to leave it.

Q: Will I have to have my house rewired if I change to a new electricity provider?

A: No and if you change to a new gas provider you won’t have to have the pipes replaced either.

Q: Why do the energy companies push me to be on direct debit, I like to pay bills when they come in?

A: It’s much more efficient and saves admin for the energy company to take payment via direct debit, it also gives them more confidence that they will get paid on time.  That’s why they offer discounts to customers who pay by direct debit.

Q: Why are some gas companies cheaper?

A: Gas is bought and traded just like any other commodity and some companies are able to make better deals in the market.  At the same time pricing is also about company strategy and competition.

Q: Does it matter where I live as to who can supply my gas?

A: Yes it will make a difference and when you get a quote from a supplier you will need to give your postcode, but in the majority of cases in the UK you will have a large number of possible suppliers.

Q: If I have a duel supplier for both my gas and electricity can I change back to separate suppliers?

A: depending on whether you have committed to a fixed unit price or other tie-in or not you will be able to switch back to separate suppliers.
