Charity credit cards work in the same way as a cashback credit card except that the money goes to your chosen charity. A percentage of each amount you spend is donated to the charity at no cost to the cardholder. Additionally, many charity card issuers will make an initial donation to the charity when you first take the card.

Interest rates on charity cards are often not as competitive as the rates offered on other cards, therefore, if you are using your card to borrow rather than to spend and pay off, they may not offer the best value. The money that you will pay back in interest does not go to the charity, only a percentage of the initial purchase does.

Top Tips

  • If you want to make sure that you regularly donate to your chosen charity at no cost to yourself then a charity credit card may be the right choice for you
  • If you are unlikely to be able to pay off your balance easily then you should pay close attention to the charity card interest rate as it may be higher than some other cards
