Most broadband packages set a monthly limit on downloads that is roughly matched by the amount of money being charged for that package. An unlimited broadband package allows the user to download as much data as they want at any time and is therefore usually the most expensive package.

As there is a certain amount of sharing of capacity in an ADSL network even on unlimited download offers there will usually be some small print that specifies a fair usage policy. This means that the majority of medium customers aren’t slowed down during peak times by the very heavy demands made by a few customers.

For an unlimited broadband package to be effective it must be matched by a high speed connection. A slow throughput speed would prevent the large download capability from being of much use as it would take too long to download.

For small to medium sized home networks where several people are browsing and downloading at the same time unlimited broadband is a bonus and for anyone wanting to watch digital T.V. over their internet connection it will be a must.

Top Tips

  • Unlimited broadband can seem relatively expensive but it turns the internet into an unrestricted resource
  • It can be easy to reach download limits without realising and without an unlimited package it can be very inconvenient
  • Digital T.V. makes good use of an unlimited broadband package
