If you break down within ¼ of a mile of home your policy will allow you to call for assistance. If you break down 100 miles from home you will have the option to be towed to your destination anywhere in the UK, or if you wish to travel in style, you will have the option of using a hire car whilst your car is being repaired.

This level of cover is ideal if you spend a large amount of time in your car travelling around the country.

Premium breakdown cover doesn’t really vary much between providers in terms of what you get for your money. However, the terms used to name this level of cover do vary so make sure you are buying the right policy.

This level of cover will normally be the most expensive breakdown cover offered by the provider (for policies providing breakdown assistance in the UK) and terms and conditions will vary between different companies. Some will stipulate rules about the age of the vehicle and the level of service history it has, so be sure to read these before buying.

Top Tips

  • When comparing breakdown cover policies, make sure you also compare the restrictions and exclusions in the terms and conditions
  • Premium breakdown cover should include everything offered by a basic policy plus the additions you would include in the various comprehensive policies.
  • Make sure you always carry a serviceable spare tyre. If you get a flat tyre and call out the breakdown company, but don’t have a viable spare tyre for the mechanic to use, you will likely be charged to be towed to a garage.
