Capital One has extended the interest-free offer on its platinum credit card.

At the beginning of June, Capital One announced that it was offering a 0% interest rate on balance transfers and purchases until 1st September 2009, which worked out at around 15 months interest-free.

The credit card provider has announced that new customers will now be able to get 0% on their balance transfers and purchases until 1st October 2009 when they take out the Capital One Platinum Credit Card.

This means new customers that apply for the card today would also benefit from almost 15 months interest-free on any balances they move over from other cards and on any new purchases they make.

The card is available to those who are at least 21 years old, pass the Capital One credit checks and have a minimum annual income of £10,000.

The card also comes with a competitive typical APR of 12.9% variable.

There is a 3% balance transfer fee applied to the card for any balances moved over from other credit cards.

Direct Line has announced a change to the way their comprehensive car insurance works.

The company say that “these days it’s almost impossible to protect your car from being vandalised” and, as a result, they have changed their car insurance policy so that the innocent party doesn’t end up footing the bill for criminal activity.

Take out Direct Line comprehensive car insurance and, if you’re a victim of vandalism, you won’t lose your no-claims discount when you claim to have the damage repaired.

On top of this, if you go to one of their recommended garages to get your car repaired, they will clean your car inside and out for free.

In 2006/7 there were 1,895,000 cases of car vandalism*, so it is not unreasonable to be thinking of how your car insurance works in case you are unfortunate enough to become a part of this statistic.

Another great thing about Direct Line car insurance is that if you’re hit by an uninsured driver, Direct Line will waive their excess and your no claims discount will not be affected, as long as you have comprehensive cover.

Plus:

  • If you buy online, you will be given a 10% online discount
  • Named drivers on your policy will earn their own no claims discount
  • Receive an extra 10% discount if you insure a 2nd car with Direct Line

Sainsbury’s have today reduced the AER on their ‘High-interest saver’ from 6.00% to 5.75%.

This is likely to be as a result of the recent 0.25% drop in the Bank of England base rate earlier this week.

However, if you hold this account, don’t be put off by the drop in AER. Sainsbury’s deal is still a generous 0.50% above the Bank of England base rate, which now stands at 5.25%.

If you have previously taken out the account with a higher AER, the interest rate guarantee will mean that you will receive at least this rate until December 2010.

Overdue cheque changes implemented

Last week saw the banking industry implement some overdue changes to the way cheques are dealt with by banks.

In the past, if a cheque turned out to be a forgery, banks could recoup the money from a customer’s account. This could happen weeks or months after it had initially been paid in.

The changes have been put in place to better protect the customers against the growing problem of forged cheques.

The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) has been pressuring the banking industry for some time calling on them to clarify the banking system surrounding cheques and clearing processes.

A spokeswoman for banking payments body Apacs said: “The big change concerns certainty of funds. It’s only in the last few years that it has become an issue due to organised gangs getting into cheque fraud.”

Additionally, banks now have a maximum time frame within which they have to credit cheque payments to people’s bank accounts.

The changes mean that:

• Any cheques paid in by customers will now be considered cleared no later than six days after being paid in
• Interest will be credited no more than two working days after the cheque is paid in
• The money paid in by cheque must be available for spending after no more than four working days

These are now guaranteed limits according to the Cheque and Credit Clearing Company; however, it is likely that individual groups will compete to offer faster services.
