Drivers who renew their car insurance at the last minute could soon find themselves being stopped by the police.
From January 1, 2008, insurers must register customers' insurance details on the Motor Insurance Database (MID) within seven days, rather than the current 14, according to the AA.
The new rules are designed to crack down on those who drive without insurance.
But customers who do not renew their policy before their existing cover expires could then be stopped by police on suspicion of being uninsured.
Police use automatic number plate recognition technology which instantly cross-checks registration numbers against the MID.
If a checked vehicle is not on the database the equipment alerts police, and if the driver is unable to prove that they are covered, the car could be confiscated.
John Close of the AA said: "Customers can no longer delay renewing their insurance, even by a day.
"If they do they risk being stopped by police for driving without insurance."
